The Student Dust Counter on the New Horizons Mission

چکیده
The Student Dust Counter (SDC) experiment of the New Horizons Mission is an impact dust detector to map the spatial and size distribution of dust along the trajectory of the spacecraft across the solar system. The sensors are thin, permanently polarized polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) plastic films that generate an electrical signal when dust particles penetrate their surface. SDC is capable of detecting particles with masses m > 10 g, and it has a total sensitive surface area of about 0.1 m, pointing most of the time close to the ram direction of the spacecraft. SDC is part of the Education and Public Outreach (EPO) effort of this mission. The instrument was designed, built, tested, integrated, and now is operated by students.

Constraints on dust production in the Edgeworth-Kuiper Belt from Pioneer 10 and New Horizons measurements
[1] Impact ejecta and collisional debris from the EdgeworthKuiper Belt are the dominant source of micron-sized grains in the outer solar system, as they slowly migrate inwards through the outer solar system before most grains are ejected during close encounters with Jupiter. These grains drive several phenomena in the outer solar system, including the generation of impact ejecta clouds at airle...
متن کاملImprovement of the Solvent Extraction of Rhenium from Molybdenite Roasting Dust Leaching Solution using Counter-current Extraction by a Mixer-settler Extractor (TECHNICAL NOTE)
Continuous counter-current extraction of rhenium from roasting dust leach liquor was carried out using a mixer-settler extractor. Tributylphosphate was used as the extractant diluted in kerosene. The effects of the flow rates and extraction stages number were investigated. The extraction efficiency was affected by the flow rates of the aqueous and organic phases, and its mechanism was qualitati...
متن کاملA Note on the Cylindrical Collapse of Counter-rotating Dust
One of the outstanding issues of general relativity is that of the final state of gravitational collapse. Understandably, much has been written about spherical collapse , but comparatively less is known about non-spherical geometries. Thorne’s seminal analysis of cylindrical collapse 2 led him to formulate the hoop conjecture, which essentially states that horizons form when and only when the g...
متن کاملMeasurement of the cosmic optical background using the long range reconnaissance imager on New Horizons
The cosmic optical background is an important observable that constrains energy production in stars and more exotic physical processes in the universe, and provides a crucial cosmological benchmark against which to judge theories of structure formation. Measurement of the absolute brightness of this background is complicated by local foregrounds like the Earth's atmosphere and sunlight reflecte...
متن کاملUltraviolet Background Radiation from Beyond Pluto
The famous NASA mission New Horizons has now passed well beyond its historic mapping and scientific investigation of the planet Pluto, and is headed farther out into the Kuiper belt— beyond which, New Horizons will venture into the reaches of interstellar space! On its way there, New Horizons will carry out, on 2019 January 1, an investigation of Kuiper belt object (486958) 2014 MU69. Once that...
